A room with a view
One kitchen becomes two in an awardwinning West Vancouver renovation
BY KATHLEEN FRIMOND
A whole-house renovation of a spectacular home in Dundarave let its owners create a new kitchen to maximize their views of Vancouver’s English Bay and Stanley Park.
The renovation, a My House Design Build Team project from concept to completion, included repurposing the original kitchen at the back of the home to provide a spice kitchen for Asian cooking.
An original bay window from what was previously a family room was removed and replaced with a window six feet (1.8 metres) wide to update the space and take advantage of the view and the natural light. The renovation also gave the homeowners the opportunity to add a door in the kitchen for easy access to a new deck and barbecue, a favourite summer hangout.
A Cambria quartz tabletop with a chunky mitred edge is the scene-stealer in the new 700-square-foot kitchen.
“We had to install a steel support frame to reinforce the kitchen floor to support the massive 6,000-pound [2,700-kilogram] table,” says Linda Jones, lead designer at My House Design Build Team. The permanently installed table easily seats 10 for casual or formal entertaining.
Quartz was also the stone of choice for the countertops, and a solid-colour quartz tops the island that accommodates the 42-inch Miele gas cooktop. Three chrome and white leather chairs highlight the modern design, while a waterfall edge on the island reflects a current design trend.
Jones says one of the other unique elements in the kitchen is the three-sided gas fireplace set into the concrete panelled wall that separates the kitchen from the adjoining dining room. “The concrete adds another texture to the space and makes it feel cosy,” says Jones.
Also contributing to the warm ambience are the taupe lower cabinets that complement the off-white, high-gloss upper cabinets. Millwork designer Vanessa Palframan ensured there was generous storage in the cabinetry, which features full-extension drawer glides and soft-close hinges.
While the new kitchen and the 88-square-foot spice kitchen function separately, each with its own Miele dishwasher, the refrigerator and freezer were placed to provide easy access to both kitchens. And being able to use the sink and dishwasher in the spice kitchen also enables the homeowners to keep the main kitchen clutter-free when entertaining.
This kitchen, certified platinum by Built Green, was a winner at the recent Canadian Home Builders’ Association of B.C.’s annual Georgie Awards. The My House Design Build Team won a Georgie for Best Kitchen Reno Over $100,000. It was also nominated as finalist for People’s Choice Award for Best Kitchen in the upcoming Greater Vancouver Homebuilders’ Association’s Ovation Awards.
