B.C. Homebuilders Rise To The Occasion

Winners of the 2011 Georgie Awards ‘golden examples of excellent residential construction’

British Columbia’s residential homebuilding industry designs, creates and markets the places in which we live, whether single-family homes or magnificent highrises or whole communities, whether skilful renovations or multi-million-dollar mansions. It is a close-knit fraternity, an industry that celebrates the expertise and high standards of its members and never so spectacularly as in the annual Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC Georgie Awards, held in Vancouver at the end of February. And what a celebration it was for the 20th anniversary of the awards.

“From Whistler to the Lower Mainland to the Okanagan, the winners of this year’s Georgies are golden examples of what excellent residential construction is all about,” says Doug Wittal, president of CHBA BC. Some of the faces on the podium were new, others not so, companies such as TQ Construction, Kenorah Construction & Design, Concert Real Estate, ParkLane Homes, DW Builders, Harald Koehn Construction and Homescape Building & Design have been there almost from the beginning.

Other companies in the winners’ circle this year were first-timers, such as Rannala Construction, for The Portsmouth in Victoria for Best Single Family Detached Home 3,000 Sq. Ft. and Over. The Cape Cod home, with its beautiful millwork, deftly harmonizes with surrounding heritage homes. North Vancouver’s Naikoon Contracting entered for the first time this year and won gold for the Watercolour House as Best Single Family Detached Home up to 2,000 Sq. Ft. under $350,000.

Victoria builder Gordon Hemsworth Construction, a finalist in 2006, this year celebrated three wins for his Touchstone Home in Brentwood Bay: Best Single Family Detached Home $1,000,000 – $2,000,000, Best Kitchen $40,000 to $100,000 – New and Best Interior Design Custom Residence. Vesta Properties, a new homebuilder and real-estate developer in Langley, won Residential Community of the Year for Milner Heights in Langley. Major winners this year were Concert Real Estate Corp. and MAC Marketing Solutions with six Georgie Awards and Homescape Building & Design with five.

MAC Marketing Solutions joined Portrait Homes this year as members of the elite Platinum Award club, given to those who have received 25 or more Georgie Awards. MAC also won Marketing Campaign of the Year in addition to four other sales and marketing awards. CHBA BC members’ world-class houses and communities can be found on the Georgie Awards’ website:, which lists finalists and winners’ names and photographs back to 1992.
