Design On Display

Three show homes emphasize the highlights of living at the Village on False Creek.


German-designed kitchen cabinets, engineered hardwood floors with cork underlay and Italian modular fixtures in the walk-in closets – these are some of the features in each of the 40 exclusive condominium homes at Canada House. Add magnificent marine and mountain views, concierge service, a fitness studio and a communal library with a 10-foot fireplace, and life in Vancouver doesn’t get much better.

But wait – residents are also entitled to membership in the nearby Gold Medal Club, with its lap pool, steam room, dry sauna, Jacuzzi and yoga room, as well as a well-equipped fitness and exercise area. LEED construction, as well as a system that recycles grey water to flush toilets and keep the landscaping green and special thermometers that track energy use, give Canada House serious ecological credibility.

Inspired by a design by the late Arthur Erickson and completed by his architectural heir, Nick Milkovich, Canada House comprises two buildings. The 12-storey western building, at 181 Athletes Way, includes 40 homes, now for sale, while the 20 homes in the seven-storey eastern building are not yet on the market.

The three display homes, located on the second floor of the west building, are beautifully furnished in neutral tones of mocha, chocolate and white, and all boast breathtaking views to the Burrard Bridge, the north shore of False Creek and the North Shore mountains beyond. Each home features a generous galley-style kitchen separated from the living/dining areas by a four-seat eating bar and prep island that includes a sink with handsome European faucets, as well as a Cabina wine cooler. All countertops are engineered quartzite, more durable than granite.

Each suite also features German-engineered Eggersmann kitchens, with Miele and Sub-Zero appliances. All the master bedrooms are carpeted and include generous walk-in closets with modular fittings by Cabina that can be custom-organized, as well as a spacious ensuite with a soaker tub and double vanity. Flooring in several of the entries is cream terrazzo, and residents can choose from three tones of hardwood flooring for the living areas.

Patios and terraces include electrical fixtures as well as access to water, both for drinking and watering plants. The smallest suite measures 1,607 square feet, plus 91 square feet of balcony, while the largest, the penthouse, measures 4,714 square feet, plus 2,445 square feet of terrace and patio. All ceilings are 10 feet high, lending an airy brightness to every room.

The interiors of the three show suites were designed by Robert Ledingham, and buyers are offered a complimentary three-hour consultation with Ledingham and his staff. The three-bedroom home on display (2,998 square feet of living space: $3.425 million) is spacious enough to include a grand piano in the open-plan family, living and dining areas. The secondary bedrooms have their own bathrooms, and there is a powder room for visitors.

The entry features dark-toned grass-cloth on the walls, contrasting with cream terrazzo tile flooring. Floors in the living areas are medium-tone walnut. A small balcony enjoys views to the north, while a larger terrace looks to the north-west. Both secondary bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with rain-shower stalls, and the second bedroom includes a walk-in closet. In addition, an enclosed balcony could be used as an office, while a flex room located next to the laundry room, with its stackable washer and dryer, would come in handy for storage.

The two-bedroom display home (1,868 square feet of living space: $1.74 million), boasts two balconies, both with views to the west. Again, the living, dining and family area is roomy enough for a grand piano. The second bedroom has its own walk-in closet and a three-piece bathroom. A flex room provides storage.
