New & notable
The wait is over: Crate & Barrel has finally debuted in Vancouver, with a prime spot on the corner of West 41st and Cambie at the Oakridge Centre.
With 19,300-square-feet of sales space, the U.S.-based home-furnishings chain will channel more than half-a-century’s worth of experience through its upmarket furniture and housewares. Arranged in its distinctive vignettes, notable items include outdoor hits such as the Hasty Bake Grill ($999.95) and the Verano slip-covered chair ($1,599) – all part of a worldwide “curation” of great items, according to Deirdré Flynn, Crate & Barrel’s senior director of Canadian retail.
She adds that it was worth holding out for the best location for Vancouver’s new store, which follows openings in Toronto and Edmonton. “The city has always been on our real-estate strategy since day one, since first bringing the concept over the border in 2008, but you just have to wait for the right spot,” Flynn says.
Now the senior director feels there is pent-up excitement about the new Oakridge store. “There are those who know exactly what they are looking for and have been just waiting for us to open,” she says, “and then there are those wanting to poke around and find something with Crate & Barrel on it. We just want to create a buzz.”
