Fall Home Show: Flipping for Dave and Kortney

Kortney and Dave Wilson offer tips learned from their show, HGTV’s Masters of Flip.

The HGTV stars share their tips for getting the most from selling your home

They may deliver riveting screen drama flipping homes around their home in Tennessee, but Dave and Kortney Wilson know there’s a different type of savvy needed in the hot Vancouver property landscape.
The stars of HGTV’s Masters of Flip, who are debuting at Vancouver Fall Home Show, emphasize how important it is to know the numbers when buying a house, renovating and trying to resell at a profit.
Vancouver is not an obvious flipper’s market, given that its buy-in price is so much higher than it is in Nashville, where the show is shot (the Ontario transplants followed their musical dream to the home of country). “It’s difficult in any major city across North America, but if you get out into the suburbs, everything seems a lot more realistic,” says Kortney. “Of course, today people may be dealing with sprucing up their current homes rather than dealing with a move in a market that’s so competitive.”
Which is why stylish, clever renovations will be the focal point of the pair’s performance, including tips and tricks to “increase the value of your home while you’re living in it now,” she says. Take DIY accent walls, for example, or the importance of killer lighting.
Dave adds: “I’m going to be talking about cost-saving ways of mechanicals that people don’t often think about until they get into a renovation, such as window products that are cost effective and energy efficient, which add value to your home without breaking the bank.”
Overall, it’s also key to add in the odd piece of décor or colour that sums up your style, Kortney says. “I think people connect with the show because not everything is white on white on grey—you want the home to reflect you,” she adds, “but not so much that it pigeonholes you and you have to start over when you come to sell.”
Returning to flipping, the parents of three young children say it’s not a business for every couple.
They’ve battled through prolific piles of garbage and mould to transform houses into sought-after homes more than 100 times in their neighbourhood, arguing between gut instinct, budget and the analytics on the re-saleability of a home. “We have to know that we’re on the same team and the goal is the same,” Kortney says. Knowing it’s a business makes it easy to sell renovated homes. “It’s very satisfying handing the keys over to somebody and saying, ‘Hey, enjoy this…’ ”
