Brentwood Bay Touchstone Home Collects Three Awards for Homebuilder
For Gordon Hemsworth, a fourth-generation custom homebuilder, the 20th Annual Georgie Awards represented something very special. A two-time finalist in 2006, a four-time finalist in 2011, he was honoured this year with three wins, all for his Brentwood Bay Touchstone home: Best Single-Family Detached Home $2,000,000 – $4,999,999, Best Kitchen $40,000 to $100,000 – New and Best Interior Design Custom Residence.
What sets this house apart from the rest? To start with, the kitchen’s sleek, sophisticated design with a separate walk-in pantry, custom range hood and solid-surface countertop that turns to the floor. Add to that the hidden compartment next to the steam oven and the unique, green-hued finish on upper cabinets. Natural light floods in from both ends and upper windows, while oversize doors open to a spacious deck overlooking the ocean.
The unique, 6,500-square-foot home’s engineered, heated floors of African doussie wood serve as effective counterpoint to the honed-stone countertop and backsplash. Cowichan Valley Millworks built the spectacular millwork while Sandy Nygaard was responsible for interior design throughout the house.
“It’s all about materials, about simplicity,” she says of the west-coast contemporary-style design, which emphasizes clean straight lines. “It’s all about geometry; everything has to be flush, which is not an easy thing to do. Overall I’d describe it as very calm, monochromatic with predominantly natural materials.”
“We’re so very proud of our Georgie Awards,” Hemsworth says. “Our specialty is, of course, beautiful custom homes but being R2000 certified and Built Green Platinum Builders we are also leaders in energy efficiency, indoor environment and sustainability. Many of our homes, including portions of the Touchstone Project, are built with Insulated Concrete Form technology, which makes for a super energy-efficient, strong, soundproof, durable and comfortable home and when the new building code comes into effect you will see many more homeowners asking for it.”
