Georgie Awards – And the Winners Are…

Excellence in B.C.’s residential construction industry was honoured this spring with Georgie Awards for all aspects of home building, from marketing to renovating and construction of condominiums and single-family homes.

Vancouver Island's Icon Developments, winner of the Georgie Award for Best Single Family Detached Home $1 million to $2 million for a Ucluelet residence.

For a few hours they roll up blueprints, down tools, turn off the compressors and don formal finery, all in celebration of B.C.’s professional construction industry. They are the architects who design our award-winning buildings, the developers who conceive them, the builders and renovators who make it so, the landscapers, marketers and sales personnel, the financial institutions that provide the funds.

The crowd of hundreds, all members of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of B.C., gathered last month at the Vancouver Convention Centre West for the Georgie Awards Gala to acknowledge the excellence of all aspects of the residential construction industry. Finalists were announced last fall; winners in 44 categories were revealed at the March 5 gala.

Just a week earlier, B.C. builders and renovators captured 13 of 23 National SAM Awards, with Vancouver’s ParkLane Homes honoured with the Grand SAM Award, in addition to two others. Vancouver Island members Abstract Developments, Icon Developments and Zebra Group each earned an award and two Interior resort communities, Rohit Communities’ Copper Point Resort as well as Sun Rivers Golf Resort Community, added to the impressive showing.

“Earning a National SAM Award is a great achievement in the residential construction industry,” said Vicki Gerrits, CHBA BC president. “Congratulations to our award-winning members who continually demonstrate the innate skills, professionalism and leadership found in the builders and renovators in our province.”

At the Georgie Awards, MAC Marketing Solutions led the field with a remarkable eight wins, including Marketing Campaign of the Year. “We are overwhelmed and deeply grateful for this eight-award win,” says the company’s Cameron McNeill.  “None of this success would have been possible without the dedication and vision of our great clients, Kenstone and Cressey, and the tremendous efforts of our sales and marketing teams.”Coquitlam’s My House Design/Build Team earned four awards, notably Residential Renovator of the Year, and Invermere’s Quiniscoe Homes three, including Custom Home Builder of the Year. Portrait Homes, a consistent winner, won for Large Volume Single Family Home Builder of the Year and for Customer Choice Single Family Production Builder Under 100 Units.

What sets these companies apart? Portrait Homes principal Robert Grimm emphasizes accountability and the pursuit of excellence. “Our mission,” he says, “is to delight our clients. We are a team that strives for excellence in every part of the organization and every task we undertake, from community layout to home design and construction.”

Relatively new and a highly coveted honour, the Customer Choice awards have a third-party research firm poll homeowners and renovation clients to solicit opinions regarding their satisfaction with all aspects of the building process, including warranty issues. This year’s winner for Customer Choice Georgie Awards powered by AVID for Multi-Family Production Builder under 100 Units was Concert Real Estate and for Single Family Production Builder under 100 Units Portrait Homes, for Residential Renovator, under 25 projects, CCI Renovations.

“To be judged by one’s peers in the industry is daunting, but to allow oneself to be judged by their customers is bold,” says M.J. Whitemarsh, CEO of CHBA BC.

New categories this year cover outdoor living spaces and condo renovations. The former responds to lifestyle changes of homeowners who use their outdoor space as an extension of their entertainment room, the condo designations respond to the growth in the renovation sector, specifically in modernizing older apartments and townhouses.

Those in our industry that allow themselves and their company to go through scrutiny are truly leaders in our industry. – M.J. Whitemarsh CEO, CHBA BC

Greg Nielsen of G.D. Nielsen Developments won Best Outdoor Living Space for Marine Manor in West Vancouver; My House Design/Build Team took top honours for Best Condo Renovation over $200,000 for South View in West Vancouver and Averra Developments for Best Condo Renovation under $200,000 for the Brown Residence in Vancouver.

Property Investments’ Waterstone-Promenade in Surrey took Residential Community of the Year.
