Longtime Winners and Newcomers Meet On The Podium
One of B.C.’s most successful industries – residential renovation — accounts for $7.6 billion in expenditures and just keeps increasing in value. Our skilled renovators, considered among the best in North America, showcased their fabulous transformations recently at the 20th Annual Georgie Awards. Now 12 separate categories — up to $800,000 and Over — cover everything from kitchen makeovers, large and small, best condominium renovation, and any room, whether a bathroom, master suite, living area or media room.
This year the award for Best Renovation — Any Room, went to Harald Koehn Construction for Ben’s Room, a specially designed space for a 10-year-old boy with spina bifida. The magnificent timberframe house itself won a Georgie Award for Best Residential Renovation $800,000 and Over. Some of the renovators standing on the podium this year have been winning awards for their work for years; others are relative newcomers. In this latter category, North Vancouver’s Blackfish Homes and Construction entered the competition last year but didn’t place, then this year beat out four other finalists for Best Residential Renovation $500,000 — $799,999, a skilful redo of a mid 1940s Pan-Abode home.
A finalist several times in the past, New Westminster’s Mila Djuras’ Intermind Design won the company’s first gold award for Best Condo Renovation for Moscow and Best Residential Renovation Under $100,000 for Kaleidoscope. Longtime Georgie Award winner Kenorah Construction & Design added to past successes with Best Kitchen Renovation Over $100,000 for a Burnaby home. TQ Construction’s Adderley Addition was judged Best Residential Renovation $100,000 — $299,999 and Frits de Vries Architect’s Quinton Place Residence in North Vancouver won Best Residential Renovation $300,000 — $499,999.
Now 12 separate categories — up to $800,000 and Over — cover everything from kitchen makeovers, large and small, best condominium renovation, and any room.
Also a prolific winner over more than a decade, Rob Capar’s maison d’etre design-build won Best Kitchen Renovation Under $100,000 for Everything and the Kitchen Sink, a dramatic transformation. The company also won two major renovation awards as Residential Renovator of the Year and the Customer Choice Award powered by AVID for Residential Renovator.
