Rewarding Renovations

Metro Vancouver renovators are competing for honours in the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association’s annual renOVATION Awards, the winners to be announced at a gala ceremony this month.

TQ Construction is nominated in the Best Addition/Conversion Renovation category.

Whether they’re engaged in a modest bathroom remake or a million-dollar, whole-house transformation, our renovators are among the most competent, most imaginative and most professional anywhere. And business is booming. This year homeowners will spend $7.8 billion on home renovation in B.C., $4.4 billion on the Lower Mainland. Almost $1 million more than in 2009, the figure exceeds the GNP of the Bahamas or Monaco. B.C. renovators have for years been honoured with both national and provincial awards as members of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association. Last year the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association held its first renOVATION Awards, the largest in Canada and possibly North America, sponsored by FortisBC. Now 22 categories have grown to 26 and attracted more than 100 entries.

Finalists were announced in February, with winners to be revealed April 15. Among the new awards this year are Best Accessible Renovation $40,000 and Over and Best Green Renovation. “We’re making the awards relevant to current reality,” says GVHBA president and CEO Peter Simpson. “As we get older we have mobility issues so people should pay attention to those aspects. We have to find the simple things that don’t add to the cost, things such as lever handles versus doorknobs and placing power receptacles higher.

Nomination in Best Renovation $100,000 – $249,999 by Kenorah Construction.

There are certain things that renovators should be counselling clients in. “On the green-renovation aspect I believe it is important that renovators pay attention to both resource and energy-efficient features when they renovate homes.” Among the more prominent contenders for this year’s awards are Graeme Huguet’s My House Design/Build Team with 14 finalist nominations, Graham Collins’ Kenorah Construction & Design with 10, John Friswell’s CCI Renovations with eight and Ralph Belisle’s T.Q. Construction with six.

A relative newcomer and a rarity in a male-dominated business, Mila Djuras’ Intermind Design last year won the award for Renovator of the Year – Small Volume and she hopes to repeat the accomplishment this year. “I would be very proud to win again this year, but next year we won’t qualify because we’ll be above $1 million in sales. I believe we are the fastest growing company on the Lower Mainland.” B.C.’s renovators again proved highly competitive in the recent National SAM Awards, with My House Design/Build Team winning Whole House – $500,000 and Less, Delta’s Artisan Construction Any Room and Victoria’s Zebra Group Whole House – More than $500,000.

Winners of the 2011 renOVATION Awards will be announced at a gala awards ceremony April 15 at the Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel. Find a complete list of finalists and links to their websites at
