Award-winning home designs with inspiring outdoor spaces
Perfect spots, perfect spaces: These award-winning designs epitomize elegance and efficiency for outdoor living
By Lynn Mitges
The most successful use of space takes advantage of both the home and its surrounding landscape. Marino General Contracting Ltd. were recently awarded three Ovation Awards for their design and work on The Gables in Vancouver’s Southlands. The home features the grandeur of retractable glass doors that open to a 5,000-sq-ft covered patio with a three-sided infinity-edge pool and spa, all accented by mature rhododendrons and yew trees.
This is a sophisticated outdoor space with three separate areas for dining and lounging. An additional deck overlooks a pond, a creek that was restored, and a private golfing green. The lighting—encased in the property’s retaining walls—and the sound and heating is all smartphone-controlled either onsite or remotely.
An additional cantilevered level overlooks the Fraser River, the Vancouver airport and beyond to Vancouver Island.
The landscaping, designed by Paul Sangha Landscape Architecture, includes an unusual attention to detail: A rare queen bee was discovered in an heirloom hive in an old maple tree and a melittologist—a bee specialist—was hired to ensure the survival of the queen and her colony. The original 1929 rose garden was fully restored, lending a timeless elegance to this grand home.
Grand & gorgeous
This classic French château design by Mulberry Property Group Inc. for clients in West Vancouver evokes a refined style with contemporary touches.
With a backdrop of Burrard Inlet and Lions Gate Bridge, the 2,000-sq-ft outdoor space is centred on a spectacular 40-by-20-foot swimming pool surrounded by manicured gardens. A cascading overflow hot tub, stone fireplace, barbecue and spacious dining area complete this elegant entertaining environment.
A seamless flow between outdoor and indoor space features a family-oriented kitchen with an unobstructed sightline to the inviting patio, creating the perfect space and ambiance for social interaction.
The home’s design is marked by the clean luxury of limestone façades with copper finial peaks and decorative dormers. The impressive entryway port-cochère features a turntable for parking ease and is large enough for six oversized vehicles. Despite an elevation of 75 feet above street level, winter conditions are of no concern on the 200-foot (60-metre) heated driveway with snow sensor.
Taking its cue from a spectacular waterfront location, this West Coast-style cottage on Keats Island perfectly blends custom contemporary with rustic influence.
Weathered cedar is paired with magnificent windows that were reclaimed from a Shaughnessy mansion to frame a breathtaking view that reflects back to exposed rafter tails, wide-planked live-edge soffits and a 40-foot (12-metre) timber ridge beam with 25-foot (7.6-metre) vaulted ceiling.
As dramatic as it is comfortable, this home exudes an upscale cottage feel with its generous use of oak throughout, and walls that are panelled in pale white shiplap. The muted tones both inside and out are a nod to the changing shades of its beach location and are inspired by the original colour on the windows and doors.
The stunning great room features exposed beams and rafters that are complemented with contemporary, sleek appliances for a clean style as crisp as the ocean breeze that wafts through the oversized doors. And just steps away from the great room, an 800-square-foot (74-square-metre) deck at the edge of the ocean awaits.
Atop Capitol Hill and with an expansive 180-degree view, the owners of the Hythe residence wanted an agreeable space for their two young children that would also accommodate their passion for gourmet cooking.
The solution: A tiered backyard that creates flat surfaces for the children’s play area, which includes a basketball court, a custom tree house, a slide, zipline and climbing wall—plus a level for barbecuing, a hot tub, swim spa and putting green. The design maximizes the space for play areas, while maintaining adult space with an outside bar counter. The indoor space flows through large sliding doors to the outside area with integrated patio heaters—all of which adds to this home with the million-dollar view.
Selective low-maintenance and multi-layered landscaping features a synthetic lawn and various seasonal plants—from summer blooming hydrangeas and a pop of colour from a maple tree in fall, to year-round evergreens and grasses, as well as space for a vegetable garden. The multi-use yard is set off with dramatic enhancement lighting.
